It is tempting to grab all the writing jobs you can when you are working for online markets.  And there is a degree of common sense attached to that belief.  But it shouldn’t go as far as going for every job you find, regardless of whether you think you could complete it or not.

Specialist subjects are always worth more money in the long run.  You can build up a wider and deeper degree of knowledge and that means you can win more involved writing jobs.  Furthermore you will become known as a writer who is something of an expert on their favourite subjects, so bear this in mind.

If you don’t know what you could pick as a specialist subject, think about what you love.  It has to be something you really like otherwise you will become bored with it – and that shows through in your writing.  Enthusiasm is everything, and if you have enthusiasm for your subject you will find that you can write much more easily about it.

Could you be a specialist writer on food and cooking?

Think about what you are good at.  Do you love cooking?  Gardening?  Fixing cars?  Playing chess?  Whatever it is, you could write plenty of articles on that subject quite easily.  Sometimes your specialist subject sneaks up on you without realising.  You will write articles about all kinds of things and then suddenly realise that you have a preference for one in particular.  That’s your subject!

So keep an eye out for things you love to write articles about.  Watch out for writing jobs that are relevant to that subject – and build up a name for yourself as a writer for that topic.  You will love the rewards that come with it.
