This is an important question because it can have a big influence on your future writing career.  One of the best ways to work for lots of different people is to join a ghostwriting team, because you will naturally receive plenty of work from all kinds of people.

But you should still make the effort to find other clients of your own, because this will help to protect your income and grow your writing skills still further.  You can search for higher paying writing jobs too; I found my highest paying one by far after a couple of hours spent surfing around Craigslist, for example.  You just never know where you will find your next job.

As a freelance writer, you could be working for anyone

The thing is that writing jobs are just like any other kind of work.  There will always be the danger that a particular job will cease to be, and if you have relied on that as being your main source of income it could leave you in a sticky spot.

In many ways being a freelancer protects you from the ups and downs of the job market, because you are likely to receive work from several different directions.  This means that if one falls through for any reason you still have plenty of streams of income coming in from other sources.

So take a look at where you get your freelance writing jobs from.  If you only rely on one or two sources then perhaps it’s time to up your income by adding a couple more.

I think that this is one of the key points of working for yourself. Being able to diversify the type and number of clients that you have. This creates what i see as more security then, less.

Some people say get a job it is the most secure option, however i disagree. I think being a freelancer, or working for yourself, as long as you can build the client base is the more secure option. Because if you have 10 clients and lose 1 client, you still have 9 other clients.

The only thing i think needs to be remembered is that you don’t want to have 1 client that makes up a big portion of your business. Because it wont matter if you have 10 or 100 clients if you have one that is 80% of your business and you loose them, still not in a good spot.

Anyway great blog, and thank-you for sharing it with us.

Thanks for the thumbs up Joel! I definitely agree that being a freelancer is more secure – provided you know what you are doing. We only need to look around us at the state of the employment market to know how unstable it is at the moment. However many freelancers have noticed little difference to their income. I certainly don’t know of any self employed writers who are worried.

You’re right about needing a good base of clients though – the more sources of work you have, the more secure you are. Well said! And thanks for reading.
