Scheduling time off as a freelance writer
I’m not talking about evenings or general days off here. I’m talking about proper holiday time.
… earning a living one word at a time
I’m not talking about evenings or general days off here. I’m talking about proper holiday time.
It’s that time of year again in my household where we stop working and give ourselves a well earned break.
his is really a sequel to my earlier post about my own 5 writing resolutions for 2010. Even as we are rushing around trying to plan for the big day on the 25th December, it’s good to set aside some time to evaluate how our writing careers have developed during the year.
Online writing has a lot of benefits. Firstly if you work for yourself you have total control over what jobs you take on, how much you write and how many people you write for. But how many clients do you actually have?
It sounds glamorous doesn’t it? The idea of setting your own hours, selecting the jobs only YOU want to do, and earning however much you want to earn from your own writing efforts – it is all very alluring.
“I want to sell articles, but I don’t know what to write about.” This is something I get asked quite a lot, so I thought I would reveal the answer here in case you are having the same problem.
Ouch. The loss of any writing client can be a disappointing time. This is particularly true if you have been writing for them for quite a while and you’ve got used to that stream of income flooding your way.
Some writers do have blogs, but you would be surprised by how many don’t. Blogging is not only a skill that should be built up to enable writers to be able to write and sell blog posts to clients, it can help them too.
This is something that has occurred to me lately, as I have a number of writing projects that are either started but stalled, or on the back burner. These are all projects that are for me – not for clients, but for me.
If not, why not?
Let me tell you something. I attribute most of my success as an online freelance writer to goal setting. I am convinced that it would have taken me a lot longer than a few short months to reach full time status online if I hadn’t set goals to get myself there.
I thought it was about time I did another entry in the “Page of Fives” part of my blog. Now one of my main focuses on this writing blog as we move forward together is to share ways in which you can be positive about your writing…
People always say that earning money as a freelance writer is fraught with danger. You never know when your next job is coming in…
I received a very nice email from a fellow writer earlier on today that prompted me to write this post. They pointed out the undisputable fact that magazines generally pay a lot more than many online clients…
Now anyone who DOESN’T work from home is probably now thinking, ‘How on earth could there be? There’s no boss to dislike, no getting up at 7am to get ready and rush to catch a crowded train, oh and you’re probably doing a job you enjoy too. What disadvantages could there be about that?’
Well there are lots of benefits of course, but there is one that has really come to mind in the last few days – and it’s also the reason why I haven’t been blogging for a short while…
